EYE CARE SERVICES
Our vision care practice covers a wide range of services:
• Laser Cataract Surgery - It is one of the safest and most successful procedures performed today. Huge medical advances have been made in the treatment of cataracts. For patients, cataract surgery is generally a simple, outpatient procedure with little discomfort, only
requiring the use of a topical anesthetic and about a 15-30 minute window of time.
• Diabetic Retinopathy - occurs when high blood-sugar levels affect the functionality of blood vessels in the retina. In early phases of the disease, capillaries will leak blood or fluid. This can cause swelling in the retina, which may result in blurring of central vision. It can leak into the vitreous humor causing floaters or obscuring vision.
• Dry Eye - is a common disease in which the eye under-produces tears or tears leave the eye too quickly. A normal functioning eye constantly produces tears to form a tear film, which acts as moisturizer and lubricant.
• Floaters - are spots in your vision. They may look to you like black or gray specks, strings, or cobwebs.
• Glaucoma - is a disease that affects the optic nerve, the part of the eye which receives images collected by the retina and sends them to the brain. Every eye maintains a certain amount of intraocular pressure. When this pressure rises to abnormal levels, however, it can put extra stress on the optic nerve, causing significant damage. Optic nerve damage results in loss of vision, and ultimately blindness.
• Laser Refractive Surgery - is a corrective measure for those suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Millions of these procedures have been performed throughout the country with an overwhelming rate of satisfaction.
• LASIK - is the most commonly performed and well-known vision correction surgery. Using an excimer laser, the eye doctor re-shapes the cornea so that images are focused to the correct spot on the retina. The success rate with this procedure is excellent, with most patients achieving 20/20 vision or better upon completion.
• PRK - LASIK and PRK have similar results. The difference is certain patients are better candidates for PRK based on the shape and size of their eyes. During your consultation, Dr. Shnayder will determine the best procedure for your eyes.
• Macular Degeneration - affects cells in the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Central vision is essential for most basic tasks like reading, driving, recognizing people, etc. Thus, although macular degeneration leaves peripheral vision un-impaired, it can be quite debilitating in its advanced state.
• Amblyopia – Lazy Eye - is an eye condition which develops in early childhood. For a number of reasons, the images from one eye (or in rare cases, both eyes) will be “ignored” by the brain.
• Ocular Rosacea - People with rosacea affecting their skin may flush easily and have redness, acne-like symptoms, or both, on their nose, cheeks, chin or forehead. Patients who have ocular rosacea (involving the eye) may have red or bloodshot eyes, burning or tearing or the sensation of foreign material in the eye.
• Blepharitis – is a condition in which both the upper and lower eyelids become coated with oily particles and bacteria near the base of the eyelashes. It may cause irritation, itchiness, redness, and stinging or burning of the eye.
• Intraocular (Implant) Lenses - replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. IOLs have been around since the mid-1960s, though the first FDA approval for one occurred in 1981.
• Strabismus – is also called a “crossed eye”, is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned. Eye position is controlled by six muscles, called extraocular muscles, which surround the eye. Strabismus is most often caused by one or more of these muscles pulling either too hard or not hard enough.
• Eye Exams - A thorough eye examination by an eye doctor consists of a variety of standard tests designed to measure visual acuity and other vision faculties, as well as observe the health of the eye and check for common eye diseases. There is no pain or discomfort associated with an eye exam, and they typically take less than an hour.
• Contact Lenses - are a great alternative or complement to glasses for those who require corrective eyewear. They come in a variety of forms, made of different materials, and designed for different patterns of wear. Our eye doctor and staff can help choose the best type for your eyes, furnish you with the correct prescription, and provide expert instruction for proper care and use of your contacts.
• Eye Glasses - There are numerous choices when deciding on prescription glasses or contacts. Glasses not only need to look great, they need to fit your facial characteristics and lifestyle. From the workout room to the board room, Hillcrest Opticians has an amazing selection of high quality, name brand eyewear to choose from. Come meet Sandy, our experienced optician, who can assist you in making the right selection.
This website was designed with you in mind. Part of our commitment to serving our patients is to provide them with useful information to help them make more informed decisions about the various treatments for diseases of the eye that are available today.
