Glaucoma Evaluation

Glaucoma can damage vision before symptoms appear.

Glaucoma Evaluation and Management in Kinnelon, NJ

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss if not detected and managed properly. Because glaucoma may not cause obvious early symptoms, regular eye exams are essential for patients at risk.

You may need a glaucoma evaluation if you:

The National Eye Institute states that glaucoma detection in higher-risk individuals is best done through a comprehensive dilated eye exam, including eye pressure measurement, optic nerve evaluation, retina examination, and visual field testing when indicated. At New Jersey Eye MD, Dr. Eric Shnayder evaluates glaucoma risk, monitors optic nerve health, checks eye pressure, and recommends appropriate follow-up or treatment based on each patient’s condition.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) in New Jersey

Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and cause permanent vision loss, often before you notice symptoms. Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure to help protect the vision you have.

At New Jersey Eye MD, Dr. Eric Shnayder evaluates your eye pressure, optic nerve, type of glaucoma, and treatment history to determine whether a minimally invasive glaucoma procedure may be appropriate. Some procedures can also be performed during cataract surgery.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

iStent®
An iStent is a tiny device placed in the eye’s drainage system to help fluid flow out and lower eye pressure. Certain iStent models are designed for eligible patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Goniotomy
Goniotomy opens part of the eye’s natural drainage tissue to help fluid leave the eye more easily. Depending on the patient’s needs, it may be performed alone or alongside cataract surgery.

iDose® TR
iDose TR is a small implant that gradually releases travoprost, a medication that lowers eye pressure. Unlike iStent and goniotomy, it delivers medication rather than opening a drainage pathway.

Is a Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Procedure Right for You?

The best approach depends on your diagnosis, the amount of pressure reduction you need, your current medications, and whether you also have cataracts. These treatments may reduce eye pressure or the need for eye drops, but results vary, and some patients will still need medication or additional treatment. They cannot restore vision already lost to glaucoma.
